Our Story.

Founder and artistic director of Vox Vanguard, Matthew Tosca is a highly trained orchestral conductor and violinist, and he is also a Synesthete.

Synesthesia is a perceptual phenomenon in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway. Synesthetes – or people who have synesthesia – may see sounds, taste words or feel a sensation on their skin when they smell certain scents.

Tosca can see sound.

In 2008, Tosca realised not everyone visualized sound in the same way. Upon making this discovery, he began to design and develop a performance concept that would allow audiences to visualise and experience music in a manner that truly immersed them within its sounds and sentiments. In that moment, Tosca began to formulate the foundations for what was to become Vox Vanguard.
